SCC ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC
MEETING IS DEC. 10-11 IN NYC
; The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC)
annual Scientific Meeting and Technology Showcase will be held Dec. 10-
11 at the New York Hilton Hotel in
New York City.
The annual meeting program begins
on Thursday, Dec. 10 with Session A on
sunscreens. During this session will be
the Frontier of Science Award Lecture,
“DNA: Not Merely the Secret of Life,” by
Nadrian C. Seeman, Ph.D. of New York
Session B will cover on modeling and
Session C will cover skin biology.
Session D on formulations fundamentals will include the Keynote
Award Lecture, sponsored by Ruger
Chemical Corp. The lecture—“A
Review of the Progress of Personal
Cleansing Products During the Last
50 Years”—will be made by Ricardo
Diez, Ph.D. of Chanel, Inc.
The final session will cover hair color.
The 2009 SCC Merit Award will be
presented to James Akerson on Friday,
Dec. 11. He is being recognized for his
significant contributions, achievement
and service to the Society over his 49
years as an SCC member.
Revamped Cocktail Reception
Based on feedback from attendees, SCC
has made changes to the normal format
and time for its Suppliers Cocktail
Reception, which is scheduled for
This year’s event will take place earlier than in previous years—from 5-7
p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the New
York Hilton. Cocktails and a large variety of food will be served buffet style. In
addition, SCC has eliminated live
entertainment, which it contends will
allow attendees to talk without interruptions.
In addition, all emeritus members of
SCC are invited to a “Meet & Greet” on
Thursday, Dec. 10 from 4-5 p.m. in the
Morgan Suite on the 2nd floor at the
New York Hilton.
Prior to the Scientific Meeting, SCC
will hold two continuing education programs on Wednesday, Dec. 9. These all-day classes include: “The Chemistry
and Formulations of Color Cosmetics”
and “Back to Basics: Hair Conditioners
Formulating and Testing Hair
Conditioner Products.” Both courses
are $300 for SCC members and $400

During the luncheon on Thursday, Dec.
10, the SCC board of directors will present its highest honor, the Maison
deNavarre Medal Award, to Dr. Janusz
Dr. Jachowicz is a distinguished
research scientist in the area of hair
physico-chemistry as it responds to the
environment and the use of personal
care product treatments. His expertise
is in measuring the physical properties
of hair following cosmetic product treatment, developing novel instrumentation for hair measurements, and using
theoretical physical science principles
to predict product behavior on hair. Dr.
Jachowicz has been a leading scientific
researcher and technical supporter to
the SCC mission throughout his 35
years in the personal care industry.
